Got another loaner. The Sonic I had was supplied by the warranty company and only had an 8 day allowance. The dealership has now put me into a brand new(only 5 miles on it) Passat. Which I get to keep until my car is done. That may take a while however since my engine is back ordered.
Gripes about the Sonic:
-I like to work on my trucker's tan while driving and this car did not make it easy. To have the appropriate arm to body angle I had to have the seat almost all the way up. Not the ideal seating position.
-Steering was super light
-Transmission was awful
Gripes about the Passat(so far):
-Beigekrieg has taken its toll. The quality of the interior is disappointing. They must have bought their plastics from GM.

Really? I thought at least the Passat had a better interior than the Jetta. We have a 2011 Jetta with the platic interior, and I dont feel it is a crapbox.

Regarding the trucker's tan, yeah GM is awful with tiny windows and high belt lines, but unfortunately it's not just them doing it :(
VW should just rebadge the European Civic hatchback and sell it as the VW Golf. The CTR would become the GTI. Mr. Opporunity is back and he's knockin'

I had a rental 2012 Passat and was extremely disappointed with the interior. Nothing had that VW solidity or refinement that they are known for.

I was shopping a Passat for a new DD for the Mrs. then sat in a buddies TDI and thought the interior seemed hollow and almost squeaky.

I wouldn't call it a crap box, but is a noticeable difference from my MKV. I'm curious no w though and intend to check out other models when I return this car.

I understand. The MKV is definetley the most upscale

Exactly.
I hope it's only among the models they are making for our market. If it is, how do you explain that to a potential customer who is sitting in all the cars? Or do most people not notice these things?

"Hollow" is a good adjective for it.

too bad! Our '08 is the base model (only heated seats) and although plasticky, it all has a decent feel and after 100K miles and 5 years of kids throwing food and barfing the interior is still pretty solid. The front seats are very comfortable, it's one reason we bought this car.

I have my seat as low as possible and I can put my arm up on the belt line. It's a bit annoying when the window is closed though because the edge is thin

We must be proportioned differently.

You definitely feel the difference as compared to the Golf, too. My wife and I have a 2011 base-model Golf, while my in-laws have a Jetta SE from the same year. Putting the two side by side lets you really see where they cheaped out, and even more so when you drive them.
I wouldn't say that the Jetta is a bad car, especially since, when new, it was a good $4000 cheaper than the Golf, but it still just feels a bit disappointing.
